Two senior American diplomats, thinking their conversation about the Ukraine was secure and private, were caught disparaging the European Union in a phone call that was apparently bugged, and U.S. officials say they strongly suspect Russia of leaking the conversation. The suspicions were aired Thursday after audio of the call was posted to the Internet and amid continuing criticism of the United States in Europe and elsewhere over NSA spying on foreign leaders and U.S. They also came as the Russia-hosted Winter Olympics opened under tight security to prevent possible terrorist attacks and highlighted distrust between Washington and Moscow that has thrived despite the Obama administration's attempt to "reset" relations with the Kremlin. 

The White House and State Department stopped just short of directly accusing Russia of surreptitiously recording the call between the top US diplomat for Europe, Victoria Nuland, and the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt. But both took pains to point out that a Russian government official was the first or among the first to call attention to the audio of the conversation that was posted on YouTube. The State Department said the incident marked a "new low in Russian tradecraft." White House spokesman Jay Carney pointed to the Russian official's tweet and Russia's clear interest in what has become a struggle between pro-Moscow and pro-Western camps in the former Soviet Republic. UPDATE: A controversial French comedian at the centre of the Nicolas Anelka anti-semitism row has been banned from entering the UK, the Home Office said. Dieudonné M’bala M’bala said he was planning visit London to support Anelka, who faces a possible five match ban for performing the comic’s “quenelle” salute, believed by some to be an anti-semitic gesture. The West Bromwich Albion footballer made the gesture after scoring against West Ham on December 28. “This gesture was a special dedication to my friend Dieudonné,” Anelka wrote afterwards on Twitter. But he can't have supported Paul's pacifist views, or he wouldn't have signed up for the army and said of Bush's policy on Iraq: "I wanted to fight in the Iraq war because I felt like I had an obligation as a human being to help free people from oppression". As he teamed up with Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian, the British Socialist flagship newspaper, the Left are trying to turn him into an anti American lefty. This is ludicrous.

Glenn Beck was not a fan of President Barack Obama's fifth State of the Union address last night. 

The host made that fact very clear on his radio show Wednesday morning, calling the speech "horrific from start to finish." But the "worst part," according to Beck were the "continued pronouncements that he fully intends to trash the Constitution of the United States."

Beck was referring to the president's promise to use executive orders to push through action that Congress can or will not pass. "America does not stand still -- and neither will I," Obama said in his address. "So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that's what I'm going to do."

"Over and over again, looking us in the eye, he said he would use his executive power to get his way," Beck said. 

"He bragged about it repeatedly." He urged his audience to remember this moment, because "this was the State of the Union where our president declared he would become America's first dictator." But "the most chilling part of the speech" according to Beck, was that half of the Congress "who are about to lose their power, cheered him like the lemmings that they are."

Soviet Dissident Bukovsky on the European Union

For the record: Vladimir Bukovsky was a leading member of the Soviet dissident movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Currently he's a writer, neurophysiologist and a senior fellow at the Cato Institute

Bukovsky spent a total of twelve years in Soviet prisons, labor camps and psikhushkas (psychiatric hospitals).

Vladimir Bukovsky was one of the first to expose the use of psychiatric imprisonment against political prisoners in the Soviet Union. Marxism is in essence a particular world view that isn't born out by facts in the real world. So the Soviets worked at manipulating the people's perception of reality, to the point of faking history and faking (Potemkin) villages. No foreign book or newspaper was allowed into the country for fear of someone figuring it out. Those who complied lived in an amoral world of make-belief, mentally separated for reality. But who refused to go along with this madness was treated as a psychiatric patient and forced-treated in psikhushkas, psychiatric hospitals used as prisons.

It quoted well informed sources close to Assad and reported that Germany, Switzerland, the UK, Italy, Austria and Spain have begun rapprochement talks with the regime in Syria that go further than just security and the re-opening of embassies in Damascus.
