UPDATE: I was lucky they didn't choose me: Man wearing military-style clothes claims he had a lucky escape after being followed by Jihadis who went on to kill soldier. Paul Ramsamy claims he was followed by the two fanatics two months ago Read more..

UPDATE: Meanwhile Michael Adebowale's mother desperately tried to prevent his radicalization. She tried to turn him away from Islam but "could not get through". Juliet Obasuyi, a 43-year-old probation officer, went to her friend and neighbour, a 62-year-old security officer, for help about nine months ago after her son dropped out of university.
She told him: "Michael is not listening any more. His older sister is a good Christian with a degree but Michael is rebelling as he has no father figure, dropping out of university and handing out leaflets in Woolwich town centre. He is from a strong Christian family but he is turning to Islam and turning against the family. He is preaching in the streets. He needs spiritual guidance before he radicalizes himself." More here..

UPDATE: An alleged friend of London soldier murder suspect Michael Adebolajo was arrested at the BBC after telling the broadcaster that British security services had tried to recruit his friend.
Abu Nusaybah told BBC television on Friday that Adebolajo was asked by the MI5 domestic intelligence agency if he wanted to work for them. He said Adebolajo had snubbed their approach.
The BBC said Abu Nusaybah was promptly arrested on their premises after giving the interview. Scotland Yard police headquarters said Saturday that counter-terror officers had arrested a 31-year-old man in London on suspicion of the "commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism".

UPDATE:  The Islamic Society at Greenwich University, where both the Woolwich suspects are thought to have studied, has hosted a series of radical Muslim speakers and distributed extremist literature, The Telegraph can disclose. (...) A pamphlet written by a preacher who was banned from entering Britain by the Home Secretary in 2010 was distributed during a freshers’ fair at Greenwich University in 2011. UPDATE: Two women - arrested in connection with the death of Lee Rigby - have been released without charge. A man and woman - both 29 - were arrested yesterday on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. A 31 year old woman was arrested at 11.50pm last night, also on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. Both women have now been released without charge.

The 29 year old man remains in custody. Two suspects remain in hospital in a stable condition. Searches are ongoing at six residential addresses; three in south London, one in east London, one in north London and one in Lincolnshire. The investigation continues.

Btw, this is Blessing (32), Michael Adebolajo's smiling sister.

UPDATE: The Syrian-born Islamist cleric, Omar Bakri who taught one of the Jihadis, praised the attack for its "courage" and said Muslims would see it as a strike on a military target. With this definition Bakri is blowing to pieces the premise prevailing in the West, that terrorist attacks are civilian and criminal in nature and that the military and civilians are separate categories.

In an interview in Tripoli, Lebanon, where Bakri has lived since being banished from Britain in 2005, the founder of banned British Jihadist group Al Muhajiroun, said he knew suspect Michael Abebolajo from a decade ago. Anjem Choudary, who took over the leadership of Al Muhajiroun when Bakri was exiled from Britain, said suspect #1 Adebolajo attended the group's events until two years ago.

The second Jihadi has meanwhile been identified as a Nigerian-born naturalized British citizen called Michael Adebowale, 22.

  • Accomplice believed to be from Harold Hill, Romford.
  • Raids carried out in Lincolnshire, Romford, Greenwich and Woolwich.
  • Suspects are not believed to be part of a terror group.
  • Both are being treated in separate hospitals.
  • Sources: "Adebolajo was arrested on his way to join Al Shabaab in Somalia".
  • Insiders said he disappeared two years ago.
  • He is said to have been well-known on the Islamic extremist scene in Britain.
  • The two suspects are not thought to have links to terror groups based in Nigeria, such as the jihadist militant organisation Boko Haram.
  • Scotland Yard said an extra 1,200 officers were deployed on the streets of London.

UPDATE: British police have arrested two more people as part of the probe of the brutal cleaver attack that killed a British soldier. A man and a woman, both 29, were arrested Thursday on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, Metropolitan Police said. No further details were given.

Warranted searches have been carried out at six residential addresses, police said. "This is a large, complex and fast-moving investigation which continues to develop," police said in a statement. "Many lines of inquiry are being followed by detectives and the investigation is progressing well."

UPDATE: FRIGHTENING! This attitude is institutionalized. The former Minister for Security and Counter-Terrorism Lord West, admits 'lone wolf' terrorist attacks are very difficult to prevent.

Here we go again! Chief of Defence Staff General Sir David Richards said: "It's a very difficult balancing act. We are very proud of the uniform we wear #WearWithPride, we have huge support around the country, this is a completely isolated incident." Has absolutely nothing to do with the 20,928 terrorist attacks since 9/11!

UPDATE: Drummer Rigby had taken up a post with the Regimental Recruiting Team in London in 2011. "An experienced and talented side drummer and machine gunner, he was a true warrior and served with distinction in Afghanistan, Germany and Cyprus," said 2nd Fusiliers commanding officer Lt Col Jim Taylor.

UPDATE: Two men are under arrest in hospital after police shot them near Woolwich Barracks. The suspects, believed to include Michael Adebolajo, were known to security services, sources have said. Sources said reports the men had featured in "several investigations" in recent years - but were not deemed to be planning an attack - "were not inaccurate". They confirmed one of the suspects was intercepted by police last year while leaving the country. According to BBC sources, Mr Adebolajo, a Briton of Nigerian descent, comes from a devout Christian family but took up Islam after leaving college in 2001.

UPDATE: Victim identified as Drummer Lee Rigby of the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Drummer Rigby, 25, from Manchester, leaves behind a two-year-old son.

"An extremely popular and witty soldier, Drummer Rigby was a larger than life personality within the Corps of Drums and was well known, liked and respected across the Second Fusiliers," the MoD statement said.

"He was a passionate and life-long Manchester United fan." He had joined the Army in 2006, and is described as a "loving father to his son Jack" and someone who would be "sorely missed by all who knew him".

"The only reason we have killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers. And this British soldier is one. It is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. By Allah, we swear by the almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone. So what if we want to live by the Shari'a in Muslim lands? Why does that mean you must follow us and chase us and call us extremists and kill us? Rather you lot are extreme. You are the ones that when you drop a bomb you think it hits one person? Or rather your bomb wipes out a whole family? This is the reality. By Allah if I saw your mother today with a buggy I would help her up the stairs. This is my nature. But we are forced by the Qur'an, in Sura At-Tawba, through many ayah in the Qu'ran, we must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. I apologise that women had to witness this today but in our lands women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your governments, they don’t care about you. You think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start busting our guns? You think politicians are going to die? No, it’s going to be the average guy, like you and your children. So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so can all live in peace. So leave our lands and we can all live in peace. That’s all I have to say. [in Arabic:] Allah’s peace and blessings be upon you."

UPDATE:  A dramatic video emerged after terrified eyewitnesses saw two men shot by police marksmen following a machete attack on a serving soldier in Woolwich, south-east London.

It is thought that the two men waited at the scene of the attack for 20 minutes until police arrived and then tried to attack them - but were swiftly shot by armed officers including a woman.

They apparently shouted 'Allah Akbar', which means 'God is great' in Arabic, and tried to film the attack, the BBC's political editor Nick Robinson said.

Theresa May tonight called a meeting of the Government's emergency Cobra committee in response and Prime Minister David Cameron has cancelled a meeting with French President Francois Hollande to return to London.

Two men who 'hacked young soldier to death with machetes' were chanting God is Great!

The serving soldier, wearing a Help for Heroes t-shirt is believed to have been hacked to death with machetes by two men outside Woolwich Barracks, south London, in a suspected terror attack.

The pair were then confronted by armed police and apparently shot by a female officer as they brandished weapons including a revolver.

A man can be seen lying on the road (left) in the immediate aftermath of the attack. The air ambulance arrived on the scene (right) and rushed two people to hospital.

Update 'They were chopping and cutting this poor guy': Shocked eyewitness tells of horrific machete attack on soldier

"London Ambulance Service confirmed one man had been found dead, two men had been taken to hospital, one in a serious condition. People carrying out the attack were heard to say Allahu Akbar were heard"

A man has died and two are injured after police responded to a reported machete attack in south-east London.

One of the men was airlifted from the scene, and another was taken away by road ambulance.

Witnesses reported by the Press Association said two people had been shot after armed police were called to an incident in which a man was attacked with a machete-style knife.

One witness, identified only as James, said two men had attacked another man, aged about 20, who was wearing a T-shirt of military charity Help for Heroes. Several witnesses described seeing a "beheading".

"These two guys were crazed. They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there," he told LBC radio.

He said after the "horrendous" attack, the two men, who were also in their 20s, stood around, waving knives and a gun, and asked people to take pictures of them "as if they wanted to be on TV or something". "They were oblivious to anything, they were more worried about having their photo taken, running up and down the road," he said.

Thomas, a witness who contacted the BBC, said: "I got there minutes after it happened because you could hear gunshots from Woolwich High Street. "Basically two men carried out an axe attack on a young army cadet walking along the street, by the looks of things the police responded and then shot them in front of the public, at the same time I couldn't really tell if the cadet was fatally or not hurt as police were crowded around him."

The government is reported to be treating the attack as a suspected terrorist incident and the prime minister said it was "truly shocking". Eyewitnesses said a man was assaulted in a Woolwich street by two individuals who were later shot by officers.

Local MP Nick Raynsford said the dead man was a soldier at Woolwich barracks but this has not been confirmed.

Home Secretary Theresa May has summoned a meeting of the government's emergency response committee Cobra to assess the incident. It is understood she has also requested updates from the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, and the head of MI5.

BBC political editor Nick Robinson said the police view is that the attack may have been filmed and footage may exist.

Mr Raynsford, the Woolwich and Greenwich MP, said he had spoken to local police and understood a number of weapons had been seized at the scene including a gun, knives, and a machete.

School lock-down Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford said the two attackers were shot by armed officers. He said: "At approximately 2.20 this afternoon police were called to reports of an assault in John Wilson Street, Woolwich, where one man was being assaulted by two other men.

"A number of weapons were reportedly being used in the attack, and this included reports of a firearm."Officers including local Greenwich officers arrived at the scene, and shortly after firearms officers arrived on the scene. "On their arrival at the scene they found a man, who was later pronounced dead. At this early stage I am unable to provide any further information about the man who has died.

"Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police. They have both been taken to separate London hospitals. They are receiving treatment for their injuries. "I can understand that this incident will cause community concerns and I would like to reiterate that we are investigating the circumstances."

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) confirmed it had been informed. In a statement, the IPCC said: "Investigators have been deployed to the scene and to the post-incident process." Scotland Yard said the incident happened in John Wilson Street, the A205, at 14:20 BST. On its Twitter account, the Metropolitan Police helicopter team called the incident "serious".

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers have responded to an incident... "We believe at this stage officers were called to reports of an assault." David Dixon, a local head teacher, told the BBC News Channel he walked out of the school gates and saw a body lying in the road a short distance away. He then heard gunshots and instructed staff to lock all the gates of his school. The air ambulance landed in the playground and most of the children have now gone home, he said.
