Obama's 'Red Line' on Syria is a Red Herring

While the world is chasing a red herring - the use of chemical weapons, either by the Assad regime or by the terrorist rebels in an effort to actively draw in the US on their side of the war - it is becoming more obvious by the day that the West is already embroiled up to its eyeballs for some time, and has in fact been running arms shipments from Zagreb, Croatia despite the embargo. The infamous Benghazi scandal involved a shipment of Stingers from the war in Libya. 

So what is this war all about? Cynics might think it's about Qatar's liquid gas pipeline to Europe that would relieve the continent from its dependency on Russian gas supplies. But states are more than their economic interests. It's ultimately about power and spheres of influence.

Peace isn't the absence of war, but a balance of power. The war in Syria is about nothing less than the new, post Cold War balance of power. The Russo-Chinese proxy Iran, is pitted against the West's great ally, Saudi Arabia for hegemony in the Middle East. But there's also a great deal of 'diplomacy' going on behind the scenes, as this story attests to.

According to this leak Saudi Arabia has been offering a series of financial carrots and sticks to the Russians in a bid to persuade them to drop their support of Iran's proxy, Syria. Saudi intelligence head, Prince Bandar bin Sultan offered a $15 billion weapons contract to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting on July 31st. Apparently, Russia declined the offer, because the deal involved Moscow foregoing its existing arms contracts with Syria.

That's why Prince Bandar had another go at Russia. According to a report in The Telegraph, Saudi Arabia also offered Russia a chance to "control the world’s oil market" in some type of strategic alliance between OPEC and Russia to 'safeguard' Russia’s present and pending gas contracts in the Mediterranean on the condition that Russia withdraws it's alliance with Assad.

Bandar was playing hard ball when he allegedly said: "We understand Russia’s great interest in the oil and gas in the Mediterranean from Israel to Cyprus. And we understand the importance of the Russian gas pipeline to Europe. We are not interested in competing with that. We can cooperate in this area".

The leak then describes actual threats being made, with Bandar promising open war should Russia turn down the offer. The story galvanizes the Western and Saudi agenda. At this point it's getting really dodgy.  According to The Telegraph the most insidious mafia-style threat was dropped. It’s said that Bandar threatened to unleash his Chechen terrorists in order to shut down, and possibly kill civilians at the upcoming 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

He goes on: "I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us". Prince Bandar went on to say that, "Chechens operating in Syria were a pressure tool that could be switched on and off". "We use them in the face of the Syrian regime but they will have no role in Syria’s political future". Finally Bandar makes clear what this is all about: "Whatever regime comes after Assad will be completely in Riyadh’s hands".

Had Russia accepted the offer, the Saudis would refrain from signing any contracts damaging Russian interests by "allowing Gulf countries to transport its gas across Syria to Europe". This is in reference to the pipeline transporting Qatari gas through Syria to the Mediterranean financed by Saudi Arabia.

This explains why the Saudi Arabia, Qatar,Turkey, Great Britain and the US, have been supporting the rebels and Jihadis in Syria for the last two years, providing them with weapons from Libya and Croatia, and with money and training centers in Jordan and Turkey.

According to a report on 21st Century Wire, Bandar himself has been assigned to personally oversee this operation:
"Saudi intelligence, led by Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, is bringing the militants fighting the Syrian forces under the umbrella of the al-Nusra Front. The report said Prince Bandar is organizing these terrorists through Jordan and Lebanon. "Thanks to funding from the General Intelligence Department (of Jordan) and support from the Saudi Intelligence in Lebanon, al-Nusra was able to swiftly arm its forces, and make the Syrian regime suffer painful blows through its expertise in Iraqi bombings", the Intelligence Online report noted.
And there is your war in a nutshell which has nothing to do with the faux altruistic JWT's casus belli of the "use of chemical weapons", or a humanitarian intervention. It has ostensibly to do with gas supplies to Europe and global oil markets, but behind that lies the question who will wield power over the Middle East: the nefarious, apocalyptic Shia Muslims of Iran or their slightly less nefarious counterparts in Sunni Islam, Saudi Arabia.

If the West's foreign policy was guided by morality, perhaps we should bomb the terror masters in Iran out of existence first, followed by a campaign that would turn Riyadh into a parking lot. But neither of those options are on the cards. All we see is a smoke screen.
