Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro warned protesters in Caracas on Saturday to clear a square they have made their stronghold, or face eviction by security forces. Plaza Altamira, in upscale east Caracas, has been a focus of anti-government protests and violence during six weeks of unrest around Venezuela that has killed 28 people. "I'm giving the Chuckys, the killers, just a few hours," Maduro said, using the name of a murderous child-doll in a horror film to describe anti-government demonstrators (Source)

MADURO UNLEASHES PARATROOPERS ON PROTESTS

Paratroopers are heading to a Venezuelan border area torn by fierce clashes between police and anti-government protesters, while security forces are being accused of turning many parts of the country into free-fire zones in their bid to silence a rejuvenated movement challenging socialist rule. President Nicolas Maduro's opponents charged Thursday that he has unleashed the military, police and civilian militias against those who blame the administration for hardships in a country that is rich in oil but struggling with overheated inflation and one of the world's worst homicide rates. Violence has escalated across Venezuela since a Feb. 12 opposition rally that was followed by clashes between young activists and the National Guard in which three people died. At least three more deaths and dozens of injuries have occurred in protest violence since then. Leopoldo Lopez, the jailed opposition leader who organized the mass rally, was ordered early Thursday to remain in detention to face charges that include arson and criminal incitement. (Source)

MOST SERIOUS CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST OPPOSITION LEADER

Venezuelan prosecutors dropped the most serious charges against opposition figure Leopoldo Lopez, whom the country's president had blamed for inciting clashes that have left at least five people dead, his lawyers said Thursday. Lopez, one of the leading opposition figures in Venezuela, was formally charged with arson and conspiracy, but murder and terrorism charges were dropped, said his attorney, Juan Carlos Gutierrez. If convicted, Lopez could face up to 10 years in prison. Lopez's legal team welcomed the reduced charges, though it criticized the way the judicial process was being carried out. (Source)

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday ordered three U.S. diplomats expelled from the county, accusing them of conspiring against his government. The Obama administration meantime: "We weren't told of Venezuela's expulsion of U.S. diplomats".

The reported expulsion followed a statement from the Obama administration in defense of a Venezuelan opposition member accused by Caracas of responsibility for bloodshed during anti-government protests. Mr. Maduro accuses Leopoldo Lopez, the Harvard-educated opposition leader, of leading a “fascist” plot to topple his government.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry said on Saturday that the U.S. is “particularly alarmed by reports that the Venezuelan government has arrested or detained scores of anti-government protestors and issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez.” (Source)
