The onslaught of ISIS has almost become synonymous with the heroic stance of the Kurds at Kobane and their brothers of the Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq. Since 2006 a Libertarian miracle has been sprouting. The PKK clans are experimenting in an obscure form of direct democracy.

Primer On Kurdish Ideology: Social Libertarianism
Here's another primer on Kurdish studies (h/t @Ziltehund). Mansfield speaks of a Libertarian miracle, but there's a catch (at least for the areas outside the Kurdistan Regional Government). The Communist struggle by the faction of the PKK has in recent years been replaced by an obscure form of Socialist Libertarian Anarchism. No wonder it is so hard to find out what the present ideology actually is. It's yet another form of collectivism, but one that appears to be typically suited to stateless mountain people. Still however flawed, Kurds must be commended for at least thinking about freedom and how to organize their communities. Öcalan's disgust of dogmatism may prevent them from persisting in the worst mistakes. .In his years in solitary confinement, running the PKK behind bars as his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, Öcalan adopted a form of libertarian socialism so obscure that few anarchists have even heard of it: Bookchin’s libertarian municipalism. Öcalan further modified, rarefied and rebranded Bookchin’s vision as “democratic confederalism,” with the consequence that the Group of Communities in Kurdistan (Koma Civakên Kurdistan or KCK), the PKK’s territorial experiment in a free and directly democratic society, has largely been kept a secret from the vast majority of anarchists, let alone the general public. The Libertarian Miracle of the Iraqi Kurds
Stephen Mansfield’s newest book, a tribute to the Kurds entitled The Miracle of the Kurds, has just been released. The praise expressed in early reviews and the eager reception of major media portends good things for this, Mansfield’s twenty-first book. Mansfield has a message for the U.S.: "ISIS will fall. Kurdistan will rise... When all of this occurs, the U.S. will want to have backed it's most ardent though abused friend in the region."
In the video podcast "Defend the Kurds" Mansfield mentions that the IS army counts some 30,000 men, while the Peshmerga -- the Kurdish armed forces from Iraq alone -- totals up to 90,000. This puts them in a realistic position to defeat the most brutal murder machine since the Nazis. The Kurds are the boots on the ground Obama has been looking for. While it seems the US have now given up on the FSA in Syria, this may be a good time to start arming the Kurds on both sides of the border.
Without doubt a free, independent Kurdistan would be a great influence and an enormous benefit to the Near East region and perhaps even to the Middle East.
