It means there is a historical continuation we're building on to this very day. Please try to resist the postmodern habit of rejecting the information on moral grounds -- slavery for instance. Ethics and mores aren't constant, but depend on the level of human development. History must be accepted 'as is'. We can't change it. But we can appreciate its heroism and mistakes and try to learn from it so that we won't have to repeat it and lose the very thing that makes us who we are today and how we got here.
